Interview with kinky photoghrapher Sonny
“The goal is always: ‘being yourself‘”
Hello Sonny, nice to meet you. What do you want to express when you take kinky photos?
I do not have one particular thing in mind when I take photos. I like to try things out, experiment, but most of all I like to have a good time, having fun (not in a sexual way) and a conversation. All of the people I have done a shoot with, I know personally. Some are really open and let me use some pics for my portfolio, others just want them for themselves. I don’t find myself having a specific style in my pictures; I’m trying to focus on that more in the future. I do feel that my pictures should represent the person shown on it; that these persons are happy with their style and that one of the photo. I think photography can be a little gift to someone, to have a nice picture of him in their fetish gear. Something to be proud of and if they dare, something to show the world. I think the goal is always “being yourself”, I think if you can show that on a picture, than it can never be wrong.
You chosed photography as your way to express yourself. Why do you prefer photography? Where’s the difference for you other kinds of arts?
I can not draw, that is the simple answer. Photography is my way to express myself in a way where I think the result is good. I did some paintings and drawings in school, but I could not see myself in what I had made. Photography is also a nice way to frame the world and focus on a piece of it. I do have asperger syndrome and the world just sometimes doesn’t make any sense or is just too much. With a camera you can frame on details, make your own world, and I really like that. It gives the chaos in my head something to focus on.
When you think back: How did you find out you like kinky photography?
In school I hated to do portraits when I studied photography for two years. I sometimes have problems to get in touch with other persons. So I started to take pictures of myself in a kinky way just for recon and socials, the more I did that, the more I liked portraits. At some point I started to ask friends to model (non kinky). It was easier and fun to do, because I knew them and it was a less strange feeling. After that I started to take kinky pictures of other people. The first two pictures where of a friend who still tries to find his way, so he keeps them for himself, but it was fun and the pictures where nice.
Do you have personal fetishes?
Yes I do . Although I am less active and searching for kinky stuff in my life at the moment. I still like a lot of different stuff. Leather and Rubber are my main clothing fetishes. Beside that I like bondage, teasing people, pupplay, spanking, whipping, chastity etc. It depends on the person what my interest is pulled to. I used to be more a pup/sub kind of person and since a year or two, I started to be more of a Dom. But if I trust someone I still like to be sub and I love it when someone strokes my hair.
What type of photography do you prefer and why?
I do take colour photos, but I prefer black and white ones; it gives something old to it. I started out with analog photography and the grain of a black and white film is great. You can’t do that with digital cameras. With black/white you are not that much distracted by colours and it’s more the image that counts. For kinky photography I only have taken photos in a studio, so I do not know how outdoor pictures would be, but if someone wants to model for me outside I’m in! I love to walk through the forest and take my camera with me to shoot the outside world.
Which fetish material do you prefer when taking photos?
I prefer leather, because it is more of my personal preference to wear and I like how it fits. In photos I like how the light can give it a soft and easy look while it is often seen as a more hard and dominant fetish material. Also it has more waves and wrinkles than rubber does. This makes it even look a bit playful.
Which kind of situations and scenes do you like most for pictures?
In all types of photos I like it, if there is the idea of motion, that a scene shows. If a photo makes you ask what is playing and going on, then I like it even more. Not all photos have to have a big background story or some deep meaning in it, if it is some random thing that makes it interesting or funny then it’s fine. I think a picture that makes me stop scrolling and have a good look at it, even if it’s just something simple or a funny selfie is a good picture, because one way or the other it grabbed my attention and it made me feel something special. So I don’t have a preference for a specific type of picture or a specific level of professionality, because there are people that can make more interesting pictures with their smartphone in a than I could do in a studio.
Photography is about showing and displaying: What means intimicy, privacy und self-expression to you when you’re taking pictures?
I do think that if you model for a kinky/fetish/sexual type of photo, it is something private and for youself. So the model always should feel good about the photo, especially if it’s displayed or shared. For myself I don’t mind who in the world knows who I am and what I like but still I would not share everything on a picture about my life. So a model should always feel good during the whole process of shooting/choosing/editing/publishing the picture. That is why I often use myself as a model to experiment, so I know for sure I do not use something on my website or publish something more open that someone does not feel ok about. At my fetish Instagram I have no pictures of other people than myself, I do got others on my website but besides that it is up to the person on the picture if he wants it on social media.
Which plans and aims to you have concerning your art?
More models would be nice, I don’t have a car so getting to people is sometimes a bit hard if I want to bring extra lights and stuff. I would like to meet other fetish photographers. I think I have a lot more to learn and discover, so it would be nice if other photographers want to share tricks and inspiration. Maybe if I level up a bit in professionality and a bit more confidence in my photos it would be nice if I ever could make some money with it. That was once the idea when i started my studies. For now the goal is to improve, learn and in the process, help people getting nice photos of themselves and with luck make some new friends too.
